 When Last We Met

The monthly meeting of the Swedish-American Society was held at the
Ruritan Club, Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, on January 20, 2002.  The
attendance was 32.  The social hour began at 4:00 PM with  hor d' oeuvres
and beverages.  At 5:00 PM we sang Du Gamla Du Fria and My Country Tis of Thee.  We then said the Swedish table grace 'I Jesu Namn.'  Afterwards we partook of several soups and ham and side dishes and desserts.

Leland Peterson recited a light-hearted conversation between Ole the
Norwegian and Osama Bin Laden, which was enjoyed by all.

Our president, Bentley Anderson, introduced Ted Johnson's guest Bev
Cook.  He also introduced guest Sean Dirksen.

Don Lundquist gave the treasurer's report which included the budget
for 2002.  He reported a balance of $1,684.75.

Rich and Shirley are producing a play titled "Manuela and the
General" concerning Simon Bolivar, which will be presented at the Holheimer
Theater at Virginia Wesleyan College and at the Actors' Theater in the
Pembroke Mall.

A raffle was held by Diane Newlon for prizes contributed by the
members.

Bentley Anderson read a letter from the Prime Minister of Sweden
condemning the terrorist attack and expressing his support for our war
against terrorism.  Our president followed with favorable comments
concerning Sweden's change from strict neutrality to support for us.

Plans for the coming year were discussed including a musical program
by the Carlsons and Ted Johnson.  Planned menus included pancakes for
February, fish for March, lamb for April, potluck for May, a June cookout,
a September barbeque, and October meat balls and pork roast.

Ted Johnson led us in singing Klöstervalsen, Ja må han leva, Dansen
den går uppå Swinnsta skär, Helan går, Barndomshemmet, Hår hur västvinden susar, När jag är tio år, and Hälsa Dem Där Hemma.

Then the meeting then adjourned and cleanup followed.

Ole and Osama Joke:  Those in Minnesota may not know this, but Ole was
shot.  He was up with his four-wheeler cutting some trees by the Canadian
border.  Some Rangers hunting for terrorists spotted him, and using the
loud speaker, shouted to him: "Who are you and what are you doing?"   Ole
shouted back: "OLE.  BIN LOGGIN'!"    (Contributed by Marilyn Melendy.)
